I am . . .
May. 7th, 2009 07:58 pmI am . . .
trans, bi, poly, and kinky.
Thinking about discrimination recently got me thinking about how each of these things would be treated by the small fairly close community I've part of.
Kinky - they're rather not know because probably quite rightly, they don't need to know. I would probably get talked about and that would be it. Forgotten with the next piece of gossip.
Poly - Kind of like the kinky. Probably because that's how it's seen. It would probably be talked about for longer though. If parents of my scouts found out we might lose one or two, but probably not.
Bi - well, tied to the poly but probably remembered for longer as it is more unusual than having relationships outside the primary. Might worry a few parents of scouts but [shrug] probably not, the girls wouldn't see me as any more threat than the other male leaders since I present as female in my community.
Trans - this is the big unknown. Never forgotten. Probably would get explained to every new person. Discussed in the pub for years. I wouldn't expect violence but I would expect to lose friends in the community over it. The scouting movement would probably be supportive (I believe they'd have to be) but some parents might react badly. The scouts themselves, bless 'em, would probably find it weird for all of a week and then be done. My community is very supportive, when the power goes out there's always offers for space in someone's arga, or when we're snowed in someone will find you some wood when you run out of fuel for your fire, or someone will offer you some free eggs because they've got too many from their chickens, or a lift into town because the bus is late, or get you to do some dog walking for them because you're out of work and a little bit of money goes a long way. BUT I fear that disappearing if I came out as trans. I do not fear it disappearing if I came out as the other things.
But you never can judge how people will react to something.
